Meanwhile, other brands such as Samsung, Sony, and Vizio have already been offering these features for a while now, even on Sony’s Android TV platform and LG’s newest 2020 NanoCell TVs. While the original petition urged the company to bring these features to even older sets - as far back as 2016 - it seems very unlikely that older models would even have the horsepower required to support these features even Roku was forced to limit its updates to newer hardware for the same reasons. It also looks like LG may not have been lying when it said that the user experience on older TVs could be less than ideal, as a number of users are reporting sluggish performance, particularly where HomeKit is concerned, and HDR support over AirPlay 2 also appears to be lacking. LG also hasn’t yet shared any word on exactly which models will be supported, but right now it looks like it will be limited to its OLED sets. Like many firmware updates, these features are coming as part of a phased rollout, and there doesn’t appear to be any way to speed up the process, so if you own a compatible LG smart TV, it looks like you’ll get it when you get it. HomeKit support is also included, which provides the ability to control features like power and volume using Apple’s Home app or Siri.

Although LG said that it could not “guarantee a seamless user experience” for AirPlay 2 on older models, a massive petition urged the company to reconsider, and the good news is that it looks like LG listened, at least insofar as the 2018 models are concerned.Īccording to MacRumors, LG has begun rolling out an update to at least some 2018 smart TV models, allowing users to stream videos, music, podcasts, and other content directly from their iPhone, iPad, or Mac to an LG smart TV. It wasn’t until September that LG brought the Apple TV app to its 2018 OLED Smart TVs, however AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support still remained conspicuously missing - a reversal of what had happened earlier this year.
This is perhaps nowhere more apparent than it is with LG, which delivered support for AirPlay 2 and HomeKit to its 2020 lineup in January, but took another month before offering the Apple TV app - but only as far back as its 2019 models, even though it had originally promised that these features would be coming to its 2018 sets as well.
